NV Historical Markers
In 1967, the Nevada State Legislature initiated the marker program. These roadside markers bring attention to the places, people, and events that make up Nevada’s heritage. They are as diverse as the counties they are located within and range from the typical mining boom and bust town to the largest and most accessible petroglyph sites in Northern Nevada.
~A Guide to Nevada’s Historical Markers 2021 Nevada State Historic Preservation Office
I started visiting the markers around my city during the covid quarantine and I found that I enjoyed learning about the history of the land. As a millennial, once I saw there was an entire system of them to find, it really triggered my gotta catch ’em all brain cell. It’s almost like a treasure hunt because you never know if the marker is going to still be standing in the original location or not. Over the years, the State Historic Preservation Office has decommissioned some markers because vandalism persists at certain sites or because marking some locations no longer seems appropriate for various reasons.
I’ve seen almost all of the markers in Clark County that are available and I hope to one day be able to travel more throughout Nevada to complete more of my collection which currently sits at 47/271. Thank you to Nevada Department of Transportation which has contributed considerable funding to maintain the markers for the last decade.
I hope this webpage inspires to you go out and find some on your free time. Below you can find the list of markers I have visited, organized by county.
